01 — Profile

Finding the gap between narrative and numbers

I’m a second-year Financial Risk Management student at Queen’s University Belfast, graduating in 2029 and seeking a finance placement for 2027. My degree gives me the quantitative core that research depends on — Maths for Finance, Actuarial Mathematics and Excel Analysis — and I build on it outside lectures through the Bloomberg Terminal, the Student Managed Fund and my own portfolio. I’ve completed Bloomberg Market Concepts and Bloomberg Finance Fundamentals, and I’m leading our team in the 2026 Bloomberg Global Trading Challenge.

What draws me to finance is the challenge of forming a view the market hasn’t yet priced in. That approach led me to AMC Entertainment, where I believed a “meme stock” reputation was masking a cinema recovery and falling debt, and to Microsoft, where I judged fears over capital expenditure to be overdone. Both positions are now comfortably in profit.

  2. Cinema-going has been making a comeback in 2026.
  3. Debt is significant, but it has fallen every quarter.
  4. In my view, its “meme stock” reputation hides those improving fundamentals — which is where I saw hidden value.

YTD fall−37%

The thesis

  1. The shares fell 37% in 2026 on fears over heavy capital expenditure.
  2. I judged those fears to be overdone.
  3. Microsoft’s products are too ingrained in everyday life to justify a fall of that size.
  4. I bought at $369, close to the year-to-date low; the shares now trade just under $500.
